In simple terms, melasma and dark spots may sound similar, but in many cases they should not be approached in exactly the same way.

On the surface,it may just look like brown pigmentation spread across the skin.

In reality, though,it is quite common to see broadly distributed melasma-like pigmentation mixed together with spot-like pigmented lesions.

That is why, in cases like this, rather than treating everything aggressively with a single laser,it is important to first determine whether the pigmentation is mainly melasma, mainly dark spots, or a combination of both.

This distinction matters because melasma often involves skin that reacts more sensitively, while dark spots tend to appear as more defined areas of pigmentation, so the treatment approach can differ.

For that reason,
a more realistic course is often:
diagnosis → separating tone-focused treatment from spot treatment → planning intensity and intervals → adjusting based on progress.

When reviewing before-and-after photos, it is also better not to focus only on whether everything disappeared at once, but to look at how much brighter the overall skin tone has become, how much the widespread dullness has improved, and how much the borders of the spot-like brown pigmentation have softened.

In particular, with melasma and dark spot treatment before-and-after photos, the fading pattern of melasma and the clearing pattern of dark spots do not always progress in exactly the same way, so it can be helpful to review the mid-course changes as well.

Some areas may start to look clearer earlier, while other areas may take longer for the borders to soften.

Post-treatment care also does not need to be complicated.

It is usually helpful to pause stronger home-care products such as scrubs, peeling pads, high-concentration AHA/BHA products, and retinol for about 1 to 2 weeks, and to focus mainly on moisturization and sun protection, which can help keep the recovery course more stable.

Melasma in particular is relatively sensitive to ultraviolet exposure, heat, friction, and inflammation, so if post-treatment care becomes inconsistent, the skin may start to look dull again or the pigment may seem to return.

After treatment, temporary redness, warmth, dryness, flaking, scabbing, temporary darkening of pigment, or changes in redness or tone differences may occur. Skin response and recovery speed vary by individual. If symptoms are severe or persist longer than expected, an in-person evaluation is recommended.
