When searching online,

many people use different terms such as
Ota nevus, acquired Ota-like macules, cheekbone pigmentation, dark spots, or melasma.

In actual clinical practice, however,

it is important to first determine whether the pigmentation is simply a common dark spot,
whether melasma is mixed in,
or whether it has the characteristics of ABNOM (acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules).

ABNOM often appears
across both cheeks or around the cheekbone area
as a diffuse gray-brown or blue-brown tone,
so at a glance it can look like ordinary pigmentation.

In reality, though,
the location and depth of the pigment are different,
so the treatment approach is usually planned a little differently as well.

That is why, in cases like this,
rather than trying to treat it aggressively all at once,
it is often more realistic to follow the process of
diagnosis → setting the energy level and interval → checking progress and making adjustments.

When reviewing before-and-after photos,
it is more accurate not to focus only on whether it has “completely disappeared,”
but also to look at how much the cheekbone pigmentation has lightened,
how much the borders have softened,
and how even the overall skin tone has become.

Post-treatment care
does not need to be complicated.

It is usually enough to pause potentially irritating home-care products
such as scrubs, peeling pads, high-concentration AHA/BHA products, and retinol
for about 1 to 2 weeks,
and focus mainly on moisturization and sun protection
to help keep the recovery process stable.

After treatment, temporary redness, warmth, dryness, flaking, scabbing, or a short-term darkening of the pigment may occur. Recovery speed and skin response can vary depending on the individual’s skin condition. If symptoms are severe or last longer than expected, an in-person evaluation is recommended.
